The Foundation for Orofacial Myotherapy is a charitable organization focused on increasing the awareness of the role of orofacial musculature in oral and general health. It addresses the role of the orofacial musculature in the development of the face, jaws and occlusion of an individual as also his holistic well- being. It is also focused on emphasizing the importance of diagnosing and treating muscular dysfunctions in the orofacial region at an early stage and the effectiveness of re-educating the musculature via orofacial muscular exercises in the treatment of these dysfunctions. The foundation is dedicated to encouraging oral and allied healthcare professionals to learn and implement the science of orofacial myotherapy in their practices so that our patients may eat well.
Orofacial muscles are important in functions such as breathing, chewing, swallowing, sleep, maintaining posture and smile. If these functions are affected, an individual may neither grow nor age well! Orofacial myotherapy has a potential to improve the faces, prevent and intercept malocclusions, and prevent temporomandibular disorders. From a wider perspective, improving airway and sleep can have myriad benefits in terms of improvement in cognition and memory, athletic performance, endocrinal and autonomic nervous system functions, etc.; and prevention of non-communicable diseases (obesity, diabetes type II, etc.) and even travel accidents! Foundation for Orofacial Myotherapy is an interactive platform for dentists and other health professionals to join hands for improving the understanding and practice of orofacial myofunctional therapy.
